Focusing on material properties, Mat.eria (eng. Mat.ter) redefines the chessboard experience by replacing visual contrasts with tactile sensations. The traditional black-and-white squares give way to textures—neutral and cool, grainy and smooth—allowing players to navigate the game relying solely on the sense of touch. Instead of serving the sheer purpose of a construction material, oak wood and steel communicate information in a non-visual way.
Weight differences further enhance perception, as pieces including metal rest securely in the player’s hand. Intuitively designed, minimalist markings, along with magnetic features on both the board and pieces, ensure stability and ease of play. The aforementioned solutions have been implemented with grace and discretion to preserve the set’s refined and timeless aesthetic.
